Charting new courses to old places
You,” the wraith said, jabbing the finger deeper. “You just got lucky in there. You don’t know how lucky you were. Listen to me, Dahl. Stay off the bridge. Avoid the Narrative. The next time you’re going to get sucked in for sure. And then it’s all over for you.
John Scalzi - “Redshirts”
Loving this book.
It’s a very funny take on the ubiquitous redshirts, those characters that act as cannon fodder, existing only to die and show that things are really bad for the heroes of the piece. The story is told from the point of view of an ensign, newly assigned to a spaceship with a startlingly high mortality rate amongst the lower ranks. It’s kind of a cross between Star Trek, Galaxy Quest, and “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead”.
“Avoid The Narrative!”
